NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2009

The new album, Into Your Head, was released on Friday 20th November 2009 and is available to buy on the site on CD or limited edition USB Stick format.
The album tracks are also available as downloads from iTunes.

The USB format is a strictly limited edition which features the album tracks, full artwork, album lyrics, the All These Days video and 3 bonus tracks. These come on a DKB branded USB memory stick, complete with case, which can be re-used once you have saved the files to your computer.

The band completed a trio of gigs which launched the new album, Into Your Head. The official launch party at Edinburgh's Voodoo Rooms on 20th November saw the band perform to a sell-out crowd after sets by special guests United Wire and Paul Gilbody. Also performing were writers Martin Philip - who read an extract from his novel Groove - and Grant Gillies, who read his short story The Hard Way and the Right Way are Usually the Same Way.

The DKB set featured a number of guest musicians, including saxophonist Chris Smallwood who was making a second appearance with the band having joined them on satge in London earlier this year.

On Saturday 21st November the band headlined the final Fondoo music night at the Eastgate Theatre in Peebles. Another sell-out crowd enjoyed a set which in a sense bookended Fondoo, Douglas Kay Band having been the headline act at the very first of the monthly nights back in January 2008.

The last of the three gigs was something of a homecoming for the band as the guys returned to Acoustic Edinburgh on 1st December, a superb night which has played host to DKB many times.

Some video footage from the gigs can be seen on the Audio & Video page. For full details of upcoming live shows please see the Live Dates page.

The website has been relaunched to tie in with the release of the new album. Features are still being added, but in the meantime you can find out about upcoming shows, buy merchandise and enjoy some music & video clips.

Douglas enjoyed a fantastic tour of Australasia during February and March, which saw him play in some of the continent's best known cities as well as some smaller towns too. The tour kicked off with two shows in Dunedin, on New Zealand's South Island, the second of which saw him play at the famed Dunedin Musicians' Club in the heart of the city. From New Zealand, Douglas ventured to Melbourne for a couple of shows, the first of which was at the 303 in Northcote alongside The Winter Migration and Buckley Ward. From Melbourne, Douglas moved up to Sydney where he played The Excelsior Hotel in Glebe, supporting the excellent Moleskin.

Douglas then headed across for the West Australian leg of the tour which saw him play a show at the famous Settlers Tavern in Margaret River, at which he was joined on guitar and backing vocals for some songs by Paul Gilbody. Paul was also to feature at a number of the other gigs in WA, which included Bar Orient and Tunesmith's Cafe in Fremantle, Collins Music Store and the Prince of Wales in Bunbury, and the Swan Lounge and the Railway Hotel in North Freo. A big thank you to everyone who turned out to see the shows in The Antipodes.

FEBRUARY 2009

Douglas is now three weeks into his Antipodean tour. He kicked things off with two shows in Dunedin, on New Zealand's South Island, the second of which saw him play at the famed Dunedin Musicians' Club in the heart of the city.

From New Zealand, Douglas ventured to Melbourne for a couple of shows, the first of which was at the 303 alongside two fabulous locally based bands. The Winter Migration, which features Marisa Brown (with whom the DKB did a couple of gigs when Marisa toured the UK in 2004), opened proceedings with a fantastic set of beautifully arranged songs before Douglas played. His set was followed by one of Melbourne's most exciting new bands, Buckley Ward.

Douglas is now in Sydney where he played The Excelsior Hotel in Glebe, supporting the excellent Moleskin. Sadly, the gig scheduled for Saturday 28th February at Artichoke Gallery Cafe in Manly was cancelled owing to a problem with the venue. Douglas heads over to Western Australia next week and opens the WA leg of the tour with a show at the Settlers Tavern in Margaret River on Sunday 8th March. May 2007

This month also saw Douglas take time off from finishing the new DKB album to play harmonica with Gecko 3 at a couple of gigs they did in the north of Scotland. An appearance at The Clachaig Inn in historic Glencoe was followed the following day by a gig at The Skye Festival.

APRIL 2007
The Douglas Kay Band had a busy start to April with headlining gigs at Hamiltons, Acoustic Edinburgh @ Medina and Haddington's Tyneside Tavern all taking place during the first week of the month.

The new Douglas Kay Band album is nearing completion, with some special guests having recorded contributions over the past few weeks. A HUGE thank you to everybody who came down to the Tron Basement for the gig on the 30th December. OCTOBER 2003
Douglas took to the streets of Australia this week to blow away the musical cobwebs with a couple of busking stints. Unfortunately, licensing issues got in the way in both Coff's Harbour and Byron Bay, NSW, which left onlookers disappointed as Douglas was forced to pack up in order to please the local officials. Still, he was happy to have finally got out playing again after almost a month off following the last Tron gig in Edinburgh.

Douglas touched down in Sydney on the 24th October. Gigs are planned for a number of cities and towns in Australia and New Zealand, and will be posted on the Live Dates page as soon as they are confirmed.

Other news of goings on in the Antipodes will obviously continue to be updated on a regular basis too.

Saturday 4th October saw Douglas's last show prior to his Australasian trip. Sets by Douglas, Alan Munro, John Sloan, Alan D, and Gecko kept a packed Tron crowd entertained, and in the process raised funds for arc, the Arthritis Research Campaign. The number of acts on the bill meant each played shorter sets than usual, but Douglas used his 45 minute stint to air some of his lesser heard original material as well as the crowd favourites from the latest album. The unscheduled solo appearance by Alan D replaced the planned set by his band, Underbelly, who were forced to pull out at the last minute.

SEPTEMBER 2003
The Tron gig on Friday 19th September, which included solo sets from Gecko double bassist Paul Gilbody, John Sloan, and Graeme Robb, seemed to go down well with those who ventured down into the belly of Edinburgh's old town. A highlight was the short story by writer Grant Gillies, which he read in between the appearances by John and Paul. We may try to make this available through the website at some point in the near future.
Meanwhile, Alan Munro, Underbelly, John Sloan and Gecko have all confirmed for the benefit gig for the Arthritis Research Campaign which is taking place at the Tron on Saturday 4th October).
It looks very much like these will be the last UK shows of the year, as Douglas heads to Australasia for a few months in late October. Details of gigs lined up for Australia and New Zealand will be posted when they are confirmed.

Full details are available in the official Fringe brochure.

JUNE 2003
As planned, the evening of Friday 27th June saw two gigs being played, and somewhat surprisingly the night was pretty much smooth running and stress free! The Heriot Watt University show was less packed than expected due to that classic feature of the British outdoor gig, torrential rain, but a decent number of hardy souls did brave the weather to catch Douglas and Alan Davison's set. As for the second show of the night, the crowd at Scruffy Murphy's (which included various members of Ash, in town to support Robbie Williams) were treated to a set which was rounded off by some classic covers.

MAY 2003
The appearance on university radio station, Fresh Air FM, has now been postponed. Douglas was to guest on Wednesday 21st May, but licensing difficulties mean the station is unlikely to be broadcasting until later in the year.
